I never thought WordPress could be so vulnerable, but it seems like updating my functions.php file in my template with a widget declaration based on the recent posts widget has totally hosed my entire site.

And by totally hosed I mean going to the site yields a blank page. No errors or indication of where the problem is. Nothing.

Attempts to repair the problem included cutting the offending code out of the functions.php file, changing config.php to point to a freshly minted wp_ database, and re-installing WordPress and pointing it at the affected database. None of these caused a change, so the only thing I’m left to believe is that it’s affected both code in the database and in the installation.

Can anyone step me through how declaring a widget can obliterate an entire site?

I’ve reset the template and stylesheet to default in the affected database, and there was no result.

    Hey MrBluesummers,
have you tried switched the theme back to default and see what will happen?

Sorry; that’s what I’m trying now.

I changed the template but not the stylesheet to default. Now that I’ve done both, I’ve gotten some response. It looks like the theme must be affected. I’m going to bring back my parent & child themes one at a time.

I knew writing in would help. 🙂

Found it. There was a typo in functions.php that’s wrecking everything.
