   My Upcoming Events widget is pulling old events that have already passed. How do I get it to only show events that haven't happened yet?

   have you tried to use scope=future at appearance > widget > events widget > scope?

   also, if they're long-spanning events i.e. started yesterday, end in the future, make sure you've set "Settings > General Options > are current events past events" to yes.
