why the check does it do this

    In Options/Permalinks, make the “Category base” blank.

    i do leave it blank.. thats what happens when i leave it blank

    Hm, interesting. None of my blogs have ever done that. Is this your Permalink Structure?

    /gibson/%postname%/

    If so, try changing it to:

    /%postname%/

    Or, do you have your blog index in the root directory and the rest of the files in the /gibson/ directory? If so, then that is probably a limitation of that setup.
