    Hi.

My friend has 2 wp’s with Jetpack installed, usage is for stats, widgets.
Photon is NOT activated, but Photon/1.0 client with IP belonging to Automattic is downloading images from posts. What is the purpose of downloading images to Photon when its NOT activated?

    small piece from access.log

Does your friend use the Tiled Galleries module? This Jetpack module requires Photon to resize image on the fly to create the galleries, so that would explain the entries in the site’s access logs.

If your friend didn’t activate that module either, could you let me know the site URL so I can have a closer look?

If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form:

module active and ‘mosaic-layouts’ is used for those posts,
thanks for explantation, i expected Photon is only for CDN use (maybe its better to add some words to FAQ or somewhere else)
uhm, why not use GD? 🙂

We mention it in the module description, but I took note of your feedback. We’ll try to make things clearer in a next Jetpack release!

Jetpack Tiled Galleries use Photon so that you don’t need to host several resized versions of one image on your servers. Image sizes will vary depending on the number of images in your gallery, the orientation and size of these images, the width of your theme’s content area, the width of the browser used by your readers. As you can imagine, that makes up for quite a lot of different image sizes, that have to be created on the fly. That’s why we chose to use Photon.

uhm.. yes its in the “Note” when clicking Learn more,
thanks again for the good explantation and sorry for taking a bit of your time for it.
Didnt noticed that “mosaic” images in posts are served from i*.wp.com

GL and thanks for your work. I hope stuff like “PHP Warning: Illegal string offset ‘from’ in $/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/modules/widgets/top-posts.php on line 180” gets fixed in next jetpack version ) I ve seen other posts related to this , no need to reply.
