My one affilate emailed me a bunch of stuff to start making my own theme in WordPress. But for some reason my widgets aren't showing up in the side bar?

Site url? Help is free but psychic costs extra. :-)
In the meantime, check that your theme's sidebar is widget-capable. You may also want to read http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development
