    Or stubborn and lazy and obstructive, to put it more clearly.
    Blogger lets you blog. WordPress wears a white coat and carries a clipboard.
    When I paste a video or animation code into my WordPress blog, I get nothing or a link. When I do the same in Blogger, I get the video ready to run and resized for the frame.
    Any solutions which don't involve nonsense words like 'codex'?
    Any more trouble from my WordPress blog, and I transfer the entire thing to Blogger, which doesn't have the enormous pretensions, but does at least work.

    Or plugins, or reading, or learning? 'Fraid not. Welcome to the world or self-hosted roll your own blog installations.

    Adding video via a plugin is trivial and I personally use Viper's Video Quicktags. It's very straight forward and uses shortcode effectively.

    You'll have to find one you like and maintain it when software updates happen.

    That's not a bad idea. You are going to have problems. The software that WordPress.ORG provides requires work and effort. That's just the way it is, that's also why WordPress.COM, Blogger, et al have a market. Those services do the heavy lifting for you the user.

    That's a nice attitude to have on a support forum!

    Okay you didn't say that one and I'm ad-libbing. But this is a volunteer support forum by people who honestly want to help. You have to learn and you'll get straight talk here on how to get what you want to accomplish.

    If you are too lazy to do a little research and setup, stay with Blogger. WordPress is a great example of getting out of it, what you put into it.

    The poster above gave some great solutions, I hope you find what you need.

    I'm not interested in nerdery, I'm interested in getting the job done.

    If only 'learning' and 'work and effort' were as straightforward as you imply. In reality, all 'help' is couched in impenetrable jargon which it is healthy to avoid.

    So the Vimeo plugin allows me to upload the video to Vimeo (where it came from in the frist place) and then paste the HTML back into the WP frame. Is that how it works? Why is that any better than simply grabbing the HTML and pasting it.

    Your commitment to make 2 jobs out of one says a lot for your work ethic, but not much else.

    I notice that notifications are not forthcoming. Is there a handy, timewasting, educational plugin for that too?
    And while we're on the subject of timewasting, what do I do to stop spam on WP, which are no trouble on any of my other blogs, but which infest WP like flies.

    flamencoexpress: I would recommend that you use a hosted service like WordPress.com or Blogger for your needs. Clearly, running your own site is not fitting your desired goals.

    The self-hosted WordPress system is for do-it-yourselfers and professionals who create sites and systems like it. It's a base system, not an end-all be-all setup that supports everything under the sun. If you're looking to "get the job done", well, that's fine, but you still need to define what "the job" actually is. For some of us, posting a video on a website is not the end-goal here.

    So, stick to managed services instead. WordPress.com has extensive video-hosting capabilities built in. Or, use Blogger, if you prefer that. WordPress is free. You're free to use it, and you're free to not use it, and we don't really care which you pick.

    And your idea of help is to insult anyone who draws attention to the dire shortcomings of WordPress. That's a nice attitude to have on a support forum towards someone who merely attacks a series fo zeroes and 1's. Which is all WordPress is.
    You are obviously very, very, VERY committed to your favourite bit of software.
