I don't understand why there's no changelog for P2 on its theme page here on WordPress.org. It would sure be nice to have an easy way to determine what has been updated.

Posted 1 year ago #Changelogs and readmes for themes are on the wishlist for the Extend themes directory (like plugins), but haven't been added yet.
For P2 you can simply open the theme and read the "readme.txt" file, or view in online in the SVN browser: http://themes.svn.wordpress.org/p2/1.2.3/readme.txt

Oh, cool. I didn't realize that wasn't part of the normal themes pages (used to looking at plugins). Thank you for the link, that's very helpful.
The "Author's widget" is mentioned in the changelog. What is that? I don't see it in my list of available widgets.
