• I have 7 wordpress installations and this is an issue with all of them. It doesn’t matter whether I’m updating the WP installation or installing a new theme or installing/updating a plugin, etc, etc. Sometimes the automatic installation/upgrade works and sometimes it doesn’t. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. It just randomly works or it doesn’t. Why?

As an example, I just did the automatic upgrade for All In One SEO pack and for the first two sites it went perfectly and completed in about 30 seconds and then the next two sites gave the following error: Could not copy file /public_html/wp-content/upgrade/all-in-one-seo-pack.tmp/all-in-one-seo-pack/all_in_one_seo_pack-fr_FR.mo and then the next site worked!

  • Are the problems server or host specific?

All of my sites are hosted on the same dedicated server if that’s what you’re asking.

I have the same problem with that sometimes as well. Usually after it’s borked, I go in and delete public_html/wp-content/upgrade/ and then go check on the permissions and ownership of the plugin (make sure it’s me:me for example).

That’s what I have to do each time as well. I would guess that I have to delete the upgrade folder 50% of the time, but since deleting it requires me to FTP in, I just manually upload the plugin while I’m there. It’s still frustrating though how auto-upgrades just don’t work half the time and how there’s no explanation for it. No explanation that I can find anyway.

I’m 90% sure it’s a server problem. More specifically something to do with SSH (I use SFTP). Why? Because before I flipped everything over to the new server which has this set as default, I never had a problem. I never have one on my friend’s blog which is regular FTP.
