[resolved] Why is it so difficult to correct a problem on the website I used to help run? (9 posts)

I am one of a group of people who used to administer a website for Transition Bedford. This website was at web address:

    http://transitionbedford.org/

One of my colleagues recently tried to upgrade the site. It all went horribly wrong! Now, instead of seeing the transition bedford website one sees the message:

Fatal error: Call to a member function add_rewrite_tag() on a non-object in /home/content/t/e/k/teknochik/html/transitionbedford/wp-includes/taxonomy.php on line 289

I would rather like to try and fix this problem. However, when I attempted to log in I discovered WordPress had forgotten my existence. I had to re-register. Also, when I go to the WordPress Home Page I see various buttons allowing me to "Download WordPress 3.0".

I don't want to download WordPress 3.0. I don't wish to alter my PC setup one iota. I just want to be able to log in, connect to http://transitionbedford.org/ and fix it. Why can't I see a simple option allowing me to do just that? Why is nothing simple? I don't have this much trouble when I am maintaining my HTML website at web address: http://www.richardgillard.webs.com/. I thought WordPress was supposed to be the simple option!

    What's going on?

One of my colleagues recently tried to upgrade the site.

Please explain that further--tried to upgrade from what version to what version?

I regret I have no idea. I have e-mailed the person who attempted the upgrade, in order to find out more.

While you are at it, you might ask if you have backups (files and database). If not you might suggest your admin read WordPress Backups.

Thank you indiax. However, I regret that answer seems more than a little bit technical. I can't even seem to login and connect to our old blog: http://transitionbedford.org/

I fear I will need to know how to do that, before I attempt anything else.

    Hi Michael H

    My colleagues answer was:

Hi Richard, thanks for looking into this. both the threads that i sent you listed the problem in the opening post or two.

I believe the threads he is refering to are the ones mentioned in the following e-mail:

    Hi Richard,

good to hear you well engaged. No need to rebuild the site. Just need to go in via the ftp or host admin website and reset the plugins. Remove all plugins from the plugins folder so as to deactivate them then reintroduce the plugins back into the plugins folder one by one to find out which is the culprit. If at any point you feel you're up for it see explained here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/411435?replies=7 and here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/411455

If after the site is back up we see we need the back up for the content i'll be able to track down the latest version, if it's been backed up that is.

    Kind regards
    Shane

I hope this means something to you, because it is complete gooble de gook to me!

    Dear Michael H and Iridiax

Since posting this help request I have discovered something I did not appreciate before, i.e. that wordpress is not a web server and that the host machine is not part of the website at wordpress.org.

In other words I have been leading myself, and you, on a wild goose chase. I am sorry. Please accept my apologies.
