Why is index.php showing up in my blog path

My apology if this is a ridiculous question…when someone goes to my blog (pivotalgrowth.com/blog) and clicks on my about page for example or even when I have a new post, they always include the index.php in the path. Can you tell why this is and if there is a way that I can remove it to shorten the path? Thanks.

This is to do with the Permalink structure:

Settings > Permalinks is where you will find how it has decided to write your urls for you.

Hi Hauruapai. It only allows me to chose one of the one’s given, and they include the index.php. If I try to modify outside of those it gives me an error.

Can you paste what you permalinks setting is currently?

for example, a WP installation I’m working on right now is set to:
/%year%/%category%/%postname%/

Hi Cubcolour – I can only set it to one of the defaults. If I try to use the example you just put there I get a 404 error page. Here is what I am using at the moment.

What do you have for WordPress address (URL) & Site Address (URL) under General Settings?

WordPress URL: http://pivotalgrowth.com/blog
Site URL: http://blog.pivotalgrowth.com

I have tried it with both as http://pivotalgrowth.com/blog, with the same effect.

I could be wring here, but he only time I’ve heard of something like this occurring is when mod_rewrite was not enabled on the server.

Can you check your server setup or have the WP-Serverinfo plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-serverinfo/ installed in WordPress?

If you have WP_Server_Info installed, look under PHP version -> Loaded Modules. This will tell you whether Mod_Rewrite is loaded.

Cubecolour – I loaded and ran the plugin, looked under PHP version. I do not see a Loaded Modules or Mod_Rewrite. I am running on Windows server – is that why they are not there?

Oh you’re probably using IIS then? If so, you won’t have mod_rewrite as it is an Apache module.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks contains information on PATHINFO: “Almost Pretty” permalinks which sounds like what you have at the moment.
