• I made a blog without installing anything, and I don’t understand what the advantage is to installing the program and extra software. It seems a lot of folks I talk to–and we are admittedly amateurs–don’t understand why we are asked to install all this stuff (PHP, etc.) and then it turns out for a basic blog you don’t have to.
    Thanks. I’m obviously confused here.

  • Pretty confusing question too… What exactly are you asking?

Installing the WordPress software on your own hosting account gives you a lot more freedome to do exactly what you want to with the site instead of having to rely on the service provider that you’re doing your blog though.

    Thanks catacaustic.
I Googled WordPress and was confused by the wordpress.org vs. wordpress.com sites. Completely different–the former involving downloaded software, hosting, domains; the latter purely web/browser based (from my limited understanding)–yet the same organization and very similar interface. No readily found explanation on either site differentiating the two.

It’s one of the more confusing things that we get on the forumshere, so you’re not alone.

As far as an explanation of the differences, there’s a very good one here…

Thanks. That makes it very clear.
