Plugin out of date?
Automatically update?
If you choose the option, then go an make a cup of tea and relax and *only* come back after several minutes
Why does it take soooo long to update?
(In my case, 80% to come back and find out that the upgrade failed because of the failure to update one or 2 files)
Do it manually and you're done in under a minutes (OK, depends how fast you are with the mouse and keyboard)
Any explanations would be great

Slow/overloaded server? Just tried reinstalling WordPress automatically just now and it took about 7 seconds. Perhaps speak to your host?

ohh.. hmm... i have a vps server where i am doing all of my testing of my wordpress stuff
reinstalling wp in 7 seconds? i don't believe u - this would take me a good 30 min probably (if i'm lucky)! :)
do u have ur own server or are on shared hosting?
i'll speak to my hosting company though

yeah....mine is almost instant. And I'm on godaddy....which folks on here tend to dislike....
