Why do I HAVE to ftp? (3 posts)

I have received various error messages when trying to upload plugins and themes through the WP interface. I have tried the following suggestions:
    -Permission settings are at 777
-Core Control (I should note here: whenever I tried to "test transport" for all the HTTP Access Modules, they fail... could this be an indication)
-Changing the timeout from 5 to 60

    Still, I receive:
An Unexpected HTTP Error occurred during the API request.

My solution has been to upload via ftp, which works okay, but takes away some of the flexibility of WP.

I am thinking there is some kind of incompatibility with the server/host we're using, but have no idea what questions to ask, what the incompatibilities might be, or how I, on the user end, could go about suggesting change. Perhaps there is some kind of communication breakdown or perhaps the server is limiting communication somehow...

Possibly related issue: flickr plugins such as the flickrrss do not work either... most other plugins (WP-notify, Newsletter, tgn-embed everything) work fine though.

    Ideas?

It could be a server security configuration issue - specifically mod_security being enabled.

    Thanks esmi-
If it is the case that the server is configured with a security system that is blocking the features, how would I go about "testing" to see which one it is? I am working with an organization and so do not want to jeopardize their security while debugging.
