So can someone please explain why these very ordinary looking html links no longer work? My website page with the problem is
http://wrbcsailaway.org
It seems that I cannot put an active link on any page or post. I have even deactivated all plugins, to no avail.
The links are not working because you pasted or added html to the visual editor and the tags got converted to html entities.
Go to the edit post screen for that post.
Delete all the text
switch from visual editor to text editor using the tabs at the top of the content entry textarea and paste in the following:
<a href="http://codex.wordpress.org/spreadsheet">spreadsheet</a><br>
Contact <a href="mailto:jerry@sbranch.org">jerry@sbranch.org</a> or call 214 503 6619 if you need login instructions to reserve a boat.<br>

Thanks Chris. I appreciate your help.
I recently opened this new website for a small, dedicated development project, and apparently GoDaddy set it up with the editor set to visual editor (or maybe that’s the WP default). I have developed and maintained another website for several years that now has about 5000 pages, but I had never noticed or touched the visual/text tabs.
