I tried to change the homepage photo. My title and subtitle font changed: the font changed, the size reduced, and it became centered instead of left justified. I have no idea why this happened.

You probably have an HTML error that is affecting the CSS code. Or if it was a background image, the CSS may have gotten messed up. Unless you post a link to your site, hard to say for sure.
Which theme are you using?
Here is my site: ronserpico.com
Photocrati Theme 4.4
You'll need to contact them for help -- commercial themes are not supported here. But you do have some validation errors so you could also start by fixing those:
It worked fine until I deleted the home page photo. Now it all craps out. This is too much. Validating HTML and CSS? I don't even know what that is. There should be a premium service for people like me to get phone support or live help. I don't have the time to learn another career as a programmer.
Have you tried your theme's vendors for assistance? That's the equivalent premium service, as you paid for support whence purchasing the theme.
It understandably frustrating, but there is a learning curve to WordPress. It's like anything else new -- it takes some time and patience.
And yes, Photocrati should provide support for their themes -- but as I said, these forums do not support commercial themes. If they are not helpful, you could consider hiring someone if you can't do it yourself, or use a theme that is (perhaps simpler to use) and is supported here.
