   Is this by design? A quirk with my installation? Or something to do with my host?

   After I initially log in as admin, I am taken again directly to the wp-login page as soon as I click on any link, such as "Write" or "Manage".

   Why the second request to authenticate?

   I've tried changing cookie settings, but no luck.

   Not a huge problem, but it's getting annoying.

   Any ideas?

   That happened to me too. For me it was because in the wp-admin/options-general page I had my site address as something like:

   http:// site.com

   Changing it to:

   http:// www .site.com

   fixed it.

   I already have the syntax you suggested in Options >> General
