White Screen of Death - With a Twist (5 posts)

After spending hours going through all of the WSoD problems (who knew there were so many), I finally have to ask for help for one of my sites. Thank goodness it's a secondary site that I was getting ready to redecorate, so I'm not in full panic mode.

First, I made the mistake of upgrading the featured content slider from an older 2.x version to the newest one. Of course my pictures all disappeared. No problem. I'm going to redo it anyway. I downloaded several themes and tried out about three when the screen (site, admin, and all) went white. I removed all themes except the basics, removed all plugins, renamed the old, tried and true plugins, and still nothing. I did get an error log which had many lines of the following:

11-Apr-2010 00:44:18] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function popular_posts() in /home/vegaswi5/public_html/mirepoixvegas/wp-content/themes/alivapress/sidebar.php on line 15

    and

11-Apr-2010 00:49:36] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function popular_posts() in /home/vegaswi5/public_html/mirepoixvegas/wp-content/themes/alivapress/sidebar.php on line 15

As well as some specific to some plugins (which have gone bye-bye). Now I'm down to a completely naked (as far as plugins and themes are concerned), but I still can't get into my site. Do I need to reinstall and reconnect to the databases? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah - the site: http://mirepoisvegas.com

  2. I get a white page for http://mirepoixvegas.com/ too.

This works http://mirepoixvegas.com/readme.html but all PHP generated pages are dead.

Try the usual: backup your files and database again to have a fresh copy.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

Once those backups are safely stored, disable your plugins (all of them) by renaming your wp-content/plugins folder to wp-content\plugins-old.

That's a harsh way to do it, but it won't make your situation worse. See if you can get in that way.

If that does work, make a new empty wp-content/plugins and start copying over your plugins one at a time to see which one was the bad culprit.

If something goes horrifically wrong, restore your database and file backups to get where you are now.

Did you delete the Alivapress theme while it was active? If you did, I'd put it back. If that's the only error message you still have, and you can get into your admin, switch the site to the Default theme and see what happens.

I had to delete it because there was nothing there! However, I've sort of fixed the problem and think I've found the reason this happened. I completely reinstalled 2.9.2. I haven't reconnected the database yet, but I did a little playing around. I activated a theme from a trusted source and my site went white again. The only thing different is that I downloaded the theme from *another* site, not the theme's URI. I went to the URI, downloaded and activated the sam theme and voila! I have theme. I downloaded several themes from one source, and I think that's where my problems began. So I have a little work ahead of me, but since the site only had about a half-dozen posts (I'm getting ready to bring it online in conjunction with the relaunch of my main, busy site), I didn't lose much. Like I said in my original post ... no panic.

that would be "same theme" not "sam theme" - sheesh.
