Which WordPress Meets My Needs? (6 posts)

Been blogging using Blogger.com for years, until today when Google identified our new company blog as "a potential spam blog" and before I could find out anything about what was going on or fix anything, they summarily deleted it. Within a couple hours. No specifics about the nature of the issue. Just zap went the finger of the angry god and all our work was gone. I swear this will never happen again.

I need a better experience so I'm over here looking at WordPress.

Frankly, I'm confused. I get a ton of piecemeal info around here about features and benefits and types and capabilities but no decision tree that tells me how to select the WordPress type and installation that will meet my company's needs. I don't want to have to become a WordPress expert by trial and error and arduous study and then, a hundred mistakes and weeks later, find out what I should have done at the start.

I'd like my better experience to begin right away in the form of working the other way around. I'd like some trustable expert to look at my application requirements and tell me from the outset what general direction to go in. Do I need .com or .org considering what we want to do on our blog? And what is the critical path through implementation options to a satisfying and profitable business solution?

I'd like to know this info without signing up for stuff and making a lot of commitments.

How are these novice issues well resolved here in WordPress Land?

    Thanks in advance for helping.

Been there done that. That's where the confusion begins.

The exposition on that page is egocentric, meaning it just knows about itself and presents who it thinks it is. I'm left to my own on deciding what matters and if it works for me. I want the focus of the conversation to be reversed so it's not all about what WordPress is.

I want to start from my needs, like --

Can I sell stuff on the blog using Amazon and affiliate links?

    Is an e-commerce process available?

Can I get all the features I need in one WP type without sacrificing stuff that's only in the other type?

    Can I brand the header?

    Are static pages available?

Is there a meta template so I can easily and graphically manipulate the template as in Blogger (but without being annihilated with no prior warning?)

And here's the biggie -- can I do all the business I want without learning to code? I'm here to blog and get rich, not to become a wordPress guru or coder.

    So how's the CMS?

    Thanks for helping. Got more?

    Not on wordpress.com

There is more flexibility in having your own self-installed WP site.

    Can I brand the header?

    Yes - in both.

    Are static pages available?

    Yes - in both.

You cannot modify theme template files on wordpress.com sites.

can I do all the business I want without learning to code?

Yes - although you need a greater range of skills when running your own site.

How about on .org? Is this stuff possible in WP and which version? What is needed to make it happen?

Yes - although you need a greater range of skills when running your own site.

What skills? How great a range?

Hang in there. More is coming. I'm going to try a global description of what I need to do and see how that flies.

And Thanks, we're making progress. I think there is a solution, I just need it verified.

I now know WP.com won't meet my needs. Thanks for clarifying that.

Here's the vision for a content driven sales web site. Please tell me if I can do this in WP.org using native or readily available stock add-ons.

I don't want to build this from scratch by coding it. We'll want to configure existing services to achieve this aggregate functionality. I want to delegate as much of the self-hosting and routine admin as possible.

Visualize a 3 column page maybe 1200 px wide with a header above and a footer below.

Right below the header there's a horizontal navigation system for a number of static pages dedicated to resident content. These make it possible to host a static web site on the same screen with the blog. Here we publish longer-cycle content that needs to stick for a while. The usual company pages and some long-form content pitches for items that sell well presented that way.

The vertical center column is the ideal width for a constant blogged content stream contributed by multiple edited writers. Text and static images and an occasional video or podcast in the mix. Multiple contributors on different but closely related threads. All posts are tagged accurately and indexed. Everything relevant to one high level, primary theme.

The 2 side vertical columns are used for text blocks, contextual offers, and various housekeeping functions and widgets.

Across the top of the footer there's a relevant news feed serving headline links.

The rest of the footer is for video content and it's filled with a constant stream of changing, relevant content in several threads. A video blog, if you will with 4 or 6 players.

Can I do this or very similar things using WP.org? How much is configuring stock pieces and how much would require new development?

The content will attract a niche market and the rest will sell products and services.

Thanks for helping me pick the right WP stuff.
