Which update services? (16 posts)

  1. I've been having problems with some of my blogroll links not showing as updated. If you look right now (and I mean now), NuclearMoose hasn't been updated. But looking at podz site, it is. And even podz site was updated today, but it shows up on my site as yesterday.
At the same time, when I write something, I visit another site that links to me (to see if it shows myself as update) - and it doesn't. It's behind by seven days now. (Example: Chris Lin's "A Trendy Name".)
    I'm setup to ping:
    http://rpc.pingomatic.com/
    http://www.blogsnow.com/ping
Any thoughts? (Sorry, after typing this all, I finally saw that it was two questions. Forgiveness?)

The question is, do they use a service?

    I use pingomatic.
I've noticed oddness before, but I just pout it down to the vagaries of the web.

  4. Yeah, it's worked before. And for Craig's, his Christmas card post updated on podz site, but not mine. :(
    Update...posthaste!

  5. Pingomatic, it pings almost all [most] of them.

How often do you run your cron job to get the update info? That could be a problemo also.

  7. I'm using Update Linkroll, and weblogs_cacheminutes is set to 60 minutes. I don't have a cron job set. Is that all bad?

I have Update Linkroll, 120mins and no cron

  9. What do you suggest? How should I setup the cron job?

  10. Thanks Beel, I used the standard experience level setup in CPanel - I don't know if I did it right, though. ;)
Right now, it's set to run the GET command every hour for that file.
podz: Do you know how would it look like in CPanel? And is there a reason why you haven't done it on your setup?

cron ? I have to get the host to do that, so I didn't ask.
I just looked again, and I don't see this "weblogs_cacheminutes" anywhere - the 120 is for when to show a blog as being updated for on the blog.
I think I'm a tad confused ...... even an RSS prog I'm playing with is going wrong too.....

  12. podz: Maybe it's only there on 1.2.1.
Beel: Is it overkill to have both the plugin and the cron job then?

I think the plugin should be used only if you do not have the ability to set up a cron job, 'cuz it is itself "overkill" running on every page load and "underkill" if you don't have enough page loads.

it's been my experience that removing 'rpc.pingomatic.com/" from my site(s) erradicates the unwanted visitation of our buddy from the byob casion excitement.
    and that's a wonderful thing.

  15. Thanks for that insight, Bill. Since I could setup a cron job myself, I've disabled that plugin. As for the links not indicating being updated... ?
[OT] And Fernando...that's why your site won't show up as updated! I'm fortunate to say that even me pinging "pingomatic" hasn't resulted in getting any comment spam. (Using Spam Karma and Auto Shutoff Comments) It's better that links to sites don't show up as updated, as opposed to getting bombarded with comment spam.

  16. Well, I guess that's that! Thanks for the explanation - my newsreader will have to pick up the rest of that slack. ;)
