which should i do first: update wordpress or plugins?

    Everything on my site needs multiple updates. I’ve been scared to do any of it…but now my basic wp needs to get current. Which should I do first and how do I ensure I don’t lose my site throughout this process of finding compatibility routes for the plugins, etc. BTW: still scared.
