• The Codex lists three ways to give WP its own directory: Moving a Root, Using a Pre-Existing SubDir, and Pointing a URL to a subdirectory. I am currently using the Pointing method but I notice that the subdirectory displays in the URL address when navigating around the site. I would prefer to have a configuration that does not show the subdirectory. It’s easy to do for addon domains but I do not know how to do it when there is only one domain in a hosting account.

Does the Pre-Existing SubDir method display the subdirectory in the URL?

The Pre-Existing SubDir method says to copy the .htaccess from the subdirectory to the root. I don’t have any .htaccess in the sub, but I do have one in the root (the one I added using the Pointing method.) Do I delete the root .htaccess if I use the Pre-Existing method?

Is the Pre-Existing method anticipating an .htaccess file with specific content that I don’t have?

I would appreciate any clarification that can be provided. Thanks.

    Dan

  • Where exactly are you installing wordpress if you install in root folder then you not have worry about using wordpress from directory.

Thank you for replying. WP is currently installed in a sub-directory and not the root directory of the domain name. It all works well. I was just trying to not have the sub-directory’s name show in the URL bar as a viewer navigates through the site and did not know if the Pre-Existing Sub Dir alterations would do that.

If you already have wordpress in directory and you want to show just your domain name then yes using from directory will work

Thanks, again. That brings me to my original question about the .htaccess file. The Pre-Existing method references one in the wp-admin directory and I do not have one. Also, I do have one (from using the Pointing method) in the root directory. Does it get overwritten by a “blank” .htaccess file?

    Thanks.

    Followup:

I deleted the .htaccess file from the root. Followed the instructions and it works great. Thanks for all the help.
