Which Plugins are a must have to prevent comment SPAM? (6 posts)

I've got my first WordPress blog running (using the 2.0.1 version though will be updating in a minute to 2.0.2 Security Release) at http://www.oneworldcoffee.com/ using it to track the progress of the house we just bought and are renovating.

I'm going to be using WordPress for other sites (really impressed with WordPress as a CMS) and was looking at the various plugins and it's confusing especially as WordPress just updated.

So I'm seeing if you good people can give me a list of must have plugins to prevent comment SPAM.

I'm going to be leaving comments open, but don't want a load of blog SPAM. I see there's a lot of comment relevant plugins, but I don't want to start grabbing them at random and hoping they are the best ones to use. I've activated Akismet and added the API key.

Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Akismet or Spam Karma2 seem to both do the job very well.

If you don't want to think about it, go Akismet. If you want more control, go with SK2. :-)

I would go for SK2 with a Akismet plugin enable, works beautifully together. :)

When I try to turn on the Akismet plug-in, it asks for an API key, which it says you have to sign up for on WordPress.com. I can't find anything on WordPress.com about an API key. I even had set up a test account to check it out, logged in under that and still couldn't find anything.

How the heck do I get an API key so I can turn on Akismet?

The flow of that is broken.

Thanks for the quick replies, I'll check out Spam Karma2 later.

Scot you get your API key here http://wordpress.com/signup/

Signup for free blog hosting with WordPress and they send the API by email. You don't have to use the blog you signed up for. Then under plugins add it via Akismet Configuration that's next to the Plugin Editor link.

I've no idea if there is another way to gain an API key, but that's how I got mine earlier today (actually got two by accident :-).

I just use the Askimet plugin which comes as standard with the new WordPress 2.0 series. Although I have heard good things about SpamKarma2, I think I might give it a try.
