I have found several child themes for the Responsive theme
    http://themeid.com/docs/child-theme-example/
    http://themeid.com/docs/list-of-child-themes/
Which one is to be downloaded for the last version of the Responsive theme? And if your the theme is updated again, do I have to change the child theme?
Is the Canonical child theme still available? http://themeid.com/canonical-child-theme/ What would be the specific advantages of buying that one (for a beginner who does not have any knowledge of coding). Thanks for help.

(I have tried twice to post this directly on cyberchimps forum but the post did not appear. It must have fallen into spam or something. Unfortunately I was not able to find an email to ask)

To create a childtheme all that is needed is a separate folder and a style.css with a set syntax, linking the content to the 'parent'-theme.

Some plug-ins - linke 'one click plugin' - help you by creating a childtheme for you, thereby avoiding syntax-errors.
    Childthemes are not 'parenttheme-specific'.

Howto & Why Create a childtheme?!!
Don't make any changes to a theme itself. Instead make the changes to a childtheme. Should the author of your original theme update the theme, your changes will not be overwritten. Your site with your adaptations will remain intact.

Suggestion: use the 'one click childtheme plugin'.
Dashboard > plugins > new > searchbox: 'one click childtheme'
    Install and activate the plugin
    Appearance > childtheme
    > follow the instructions on the screen

    Using The childtheme:
Make the changes in the CHILDtheme!
    - copy php files / css-file(s) of the original theme [as required] to the childtheme directory and edit them as required.
