SUPER-newby question. Where is the Wrodpress default post template?

I've been searching through the forums and it looks like it should be a file called "single" but I can't even figure out where it is!

I want to change the default arrangement of the items (move categories, date and author to the bottom of the page).

Would that be the right file to edit and where can I find it in the directory structure?

    Thanks!

single.php would be the default for single posts; index.php for 'index' pages; but these might be calling other templates, and might be using functions to output those post meta data...

as you are using a commercial theme, please contact the developer for support.

this forum only fully supports themes from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

That was exactly the document I needed... but it doesn't say where to find "single.php" it's not in the commercial theme I'm using so I'm guessing it's part of WordPress?

    Where is that file hiding!?!?

    Thanks!!

if the theme does not have a single.php, the index.php would do the work; this is also explained in the 'template hierachy' Codex.

to see all the templates you can edit from within your WordPress admin, goto dashboard - appearance - editor; make sure your theme is selected, and check the list on the right.
