Support » Fixing WordPress » Where is the Dashboard tab on the first blog page?

  • Hi:
Not sure if this question has been answered before, but I have been frustrated to even find any answer in the forums.
-When I am in my dashboard and I click on ‘Visit site’ , that brings me to the most current post, I lose my dashboard tab which is my access to the admin panel. Is this normal? And if yes, does one get back to the dashboard by just using the back button or by going in to edit a post? Or am I missing something? Basically the deeper I go into the first page: reading comments or scrolling back to a past post, I can’t get to my dashboard without hitting the back button until I undo what I just scrolled through.

I just moved my blog from wordpress.com and whenever I clicked on ‘visit site’, it brought me to my first page, the current blog entry and I still had my dashboard tab (actually I had more tabs such as ‘my account’, ‘new post’, ‘edit post’) available as I moved around the blog reading comments. This seems strange to me that the ‘dashboard’ tab would not be available for me to me now.

Thanks for any help you can give me!
    -Michelle

  • That would normally be done by selecting the “site admin” link when logged in. Otherwise, just add /wp-admin to the end of your blog address in the browser.

    Hi:

Thanks for the reply. Okay I get adding the /wp-admin to the end of the blog address but why is there not just a dashboard tab available all of the time no matter what page I am on in my blog?
As far as you mentioned above: ‘That would normally be done…” when I do log in it goes to my admin page first – no problem there. What or Where is the ‘site admin’ link you are speaking of? I just want to be able to get back to my admin page ‘after’ I click the ‘visit site’ link and browse around and NOT have to put /wp-admin in the browser.

I never had to do this before @ wordpress.com so I am just questioning if something is missing or is this how it just is.

    Thanks!

I don’t think anything is missing.

What theme are you using, and do you have a public link to your blog yet so we may see? Usually, you will find a link in the “meta” section of your theme (usually located in the sidebar) for login. Obviously, that part must be okay. After logging in, it changes to “site admin”, or a site admin link becomes visible. Perhaps your theme is simply constructed a little differently. Some people prefer not to have a login or site admin link at all, and theme characteristics can vary, depending on the theme designer.

This might be of interest to you as well. I can not say if it will work with 2.6, (in fact I have never used it at all), but it may be worth a read.

    Yippie!

Thank you so much for your help – you are king! I had no idea what ‘meta’ was and I added it to my side bar and I now have a site admin link. I so appreciate your time on this.

No problem. You did all the work!
