I'm using LiquidWeb to host, and I used Fantastico to install WordPress. Now I want to install a new theme, but I am clueless as to where my wp-content/themes directory is. I was told to upload my file to /wordpress_root_dir/wp-content/themes/.

Can anyone help? I'm completely useless, I swear.

Use an FTP to upload the files, just like you had to do to get all your other WordPress files onto your website, then go to the "Presentation" tab in your Admin panel and select the name of the theme you want to use.

You will need to use an FTP program. Podz has a handy guide to using one here..

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I downloaded FileZilla. I set it up to connect with my server. I uploaded the theme that I had unzipped to my computer. But the theme isn't showing up on my WordPress dashboard under Presentation. How have I messed this up?

I have had the same problem, but I host through Yahoo! I wound up fixing it somewhat through my wrbesite program, Dreamweaver - if that helps. It at least moved the theme into the correct theme folder - haven't had any luck getting them to disply properly though.

The trick is to upload the theme into the theme file under wp_content.

Any help for us newbies would be great!!!

    Thanks!

Try installing your theme again, taking care to upload your theme folder to:

    wp-content
    -themes

Once uploaded, you should see in your FTP screen this:

    wp-content
    -themes
    --default
    --Classic
    --yournewtheme folder

    User Checks:
Before uploading, double check that the theme folder has only one folder and not two folders.

When you click open the theme folder on your desktop, do you immediately see all the files and stylesheets within? Or do you have to open yet another folder before you see the files?

If you have to open another folder, then you are uploading the theme with double folders, and one HAS to go otherwise the stylesheet will not be referenced properly.

Once you've uploaded a single folder theme to your wp-content/themes click your FTP refresh button, then go to your wordpress dashboard and click refresh in your browser toolbar.

    Once refreshed, check: Admin/Presentation/Themes

    It should be there.

PS: It helps to CHMOD your theme files. Files are generally set to 666. Making them writable will allow you to tweak the templates in your dashboard under: Dashboard/Presentation/Theme Editor if you need to.

When you're satisfied that all is grand, use your FTP again and change the permissions on your files back to 644 & theme folders to 755 to protect them.

    Hope this helps.

    Great beginner thread!
I use the free WS_FTP.. and it shows up just fine. Just make sure that once ya unzip the theme.. you're only uploading the folder that contains all the files.

    Say it's SweetPINK.

When ya unzip it... it's going to give a folder called SweetPINK.. with another folder called SweetPINK inside of it... sometimes I"ve made the mistake of uploading the initial first folder.. then BOOM it won't show up under presentation..

Make sure you're uploading the second folder...
