The API key is a wordpress.com thing, not part of a normal WordPress installation.

What is the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org? Is wordpress.com hosted blogs or something?
Yes. Hosted blogs, and the support for them is through the FAQs and using the feedback button on the admin section of a wordpress.com blog.

WordPress.com = Free hosted blogs.
WordPress.org = Free blogging platform to download and install on your own server, which must be provided by you or another hosting provider.
jenniferclason, why did you need an API key, btw?
Ah…. hmmm. Well, I think that’s not as yet possible unless you are willing to either use flock to get a wordpress.com blog (or get an invitation some other way), or run 2.0 beta (which is REALLY beta!) on a test server setup….
WordPress.com registration is now open to anyone, no invitation or flockiness is required.
Oh! Yeah, got that message earlier, but it’s already been one of those days *sigh*. As noted on another thread, it’s a space-cadet day….
Sorry!
