I just upgraded to 1.5.
In my dirs when I am looking via FTP, I cannot see my .htaccess file.
If I go in through my admin panel, I can open it, but it is the one from the prior install.
I was thinking I should start clean...
but, I do not know how to delete the old one?
Do I just wipe it out in the admin panel?

Two things:
1. The .htaccess file is hidden, so you need to enable "view hidden files" in your FTP client.
2. Some FTP servers prohibit the uploading of files that start with a "." (dot). Your best bet would be to chmod your weblog directory to 777 and perhaps the .htaccess file itself so you can use WP's built-in editor to edit the .htaccess file.

yes in the admin panel... many hosts hide the .htaccess file so you don't accidentally delete it. and don't chmod your entire directly 777 or someone with the know-how can disrupt some things.

for wordpress, the .htaccess lives in the same directory as your blog homepage. you might not be able to see it using ftp, as it's a hidden file. you're right, though, it's probably best to wipe the old one. if you can wipe it from within the admin panel, then wordpress can succesfully write to the file and it and should be able to set up the new permalink settings for you automatically under 'permalinks'. (you don't have to cut and paste like 1.2.) hope that helps.

Yes, I was trying to find the file in ws_ftp, and I cannot find it, and I cannot find how to view hidden files.
I am just more concerned that the upgrade is somehow still reading the old .htaccess from the 1.2.2 install and I do not want any problems related to that?

oopsy, now I wiped it and I get this error:

if you can still get into the admin interface go to options - permalinks set the structure you want, and click 'update' - that should sort it out

For future reference, if you want to see the .htaccess file in WS_FTP, just type 'ls -a' into the text box on the remote side of the window.

My host's new 'upgraded' server somehow over-rides the ability to see hidden files in WS_FTP even with "ls -a" . - Sometimes I hate so-called upgrades. Need to use their control panel. (Was getting 500 server errors because of a .htaccess I couldn't even see! grrrr)
