   All right - total novice dumb question here.

   I've purchased a package that contains some "starter" blogs - with pre-written posts. I followed the instructions with the package but they must have been for a different version of WordPress - because they didn't work.

   I managed to work out where to put the details for the theme, but I can't for the life of me work out where to put the actual posts - or am I supposed to copy and paste them into my new blog?

   Probably, yes.
   You make posts through the Write > Write Post subpanel in your admin interface... or (theoretically) by altering the MySQL database but that is definitely not for novice users and is NOT recommended ever.
