  • Tried to find conversation about this but the basic idea:

I found a decent theme that would fit perfectly for my site “with little bit of work”. Now I started to wonder, how much I have to change a theme until I can say “I designed this one.” Does it mean I have to start from the scratch?

One good approach would of course be “My theme xxx, based on theme yyy designed by zzz.”

I know there is no straight answer for this one, more likely I wanted just to start conversation about this.

  • I believe this would be considered a child theme when you make tweaks to a theme that is not originally yours.

Its not a child theme if it doesn’t depend on the first theme to function.

Basically, if I just change up some colours, or graphics. I may rename the theme, but I will give the original author credit, as you described.

If I start with a theme and over a few months change everything about it…like layout, etc, it looks nothing like the original, I’ll probably totally rename it.

Basically, you can really rename it whenever you want. There are no rules. But if you are using any of the original code, graphics, etc, its always nice to give credit where it is due. At least in the theme description or something

One good approach would of course be “My theme xxx, based on theme yyy designed by zzz.”

I still say go with this idea if you’re going to do it this way. Otherwise, create it from scratch. I don’t think you should reinvent the wheel, but a lot of people put a lot of work into theming great themes…so give the credit where the credit is due.
