    It displays "The requested theme does not exist." when I try to edit style.css through the wordpress control panel 'presentation' section. the file is there on the FTP, and all the other theme files are editable. does anyone have any ideas?

    Which theme are you using? The style sheet should have a commented out section at the top; does yours? For instance, Kubric has this:
    /*
    Theme Name: WordPress Default
    Theme URI: http://wordpress.org/
    Description: The default WordPress theme based on the famous <a href="http://binarybonsai.com/kubrick/">Kubrick</a>.
    Version: 1.5
    Author: Michael Heilemann
    Author URI: http://binarybonsai.com/

    Kubrick v1.5
    http://binarybonsai.com/kubrick/

    This theme was designed and built by Michael Heilemann,
    whose blog you will find at http://binarybonsai.com/

    The CSS, XHTML and design is released under GPL:

    *** REGARDING IMAGES ***
    All CSS that involves the use of images, can be found in the 'index.php' file.
    This is to ease installation inside subdirectories of a server.

    it randomly started working again, and no, i dont have any commented info on the top. it's working without it. why would i need to have it? I'm using a custom theme that I made by editing the default one.

    That commented area tells WordPress what the 411 of your theme is. It's how the software knows what name to stick on your theme in the admin area. You can also take a snapshot of your page, paste it into Photo Shop, and resize it to 300px × 224px. Then upload that pic to your theme folder as "screenshot". Mine is a GIF, but I'm thinking of switching it out for a PNG. That will be the image that comes up when you're selecting themes.
