   Can anyone tell me why is it every time I add any widget to the sidebar, it sort of defaults to the footer of the main page?

   How to adjust?

   for one thing, you've removed all of the head info which likely really confuses browsers

   Unfortunately I am not an expert.
   This is a custom design built for us.
   Your link info goes slightly beyond our technical expertise.
   I'll remove the widget for now and confer with the web designer.
