   Can anyone tell me what is the recommended place to store your default site images please.

   Can I store them in a folder called default and place that in the main theme directory?

   Any other suggestions please.

   Best way is to use media in admin panel and upload images they are saved in uploads folder so that if you change theme in future your images will still work.

   Also, I store my images in a folder named images within the child theme for child themes which I plan to distribute or use on other sites

   @govpatel's method is great for personal use, if you never plan on moving the theme to any other site
