I’m planning my first WordPress site and I’m a bit overwhelmed by the choices in themes that are available!

Entries on the right and “bars” on the left?
    Colors?
    Banner photo?
    Centered vs full screen?

What the 1st thing you looked for when you chose your theme? What, in other words, is the MOST IMPORTANT element for you, the one that, once you get that, the other elements kind of take second place?

I think it varies from personal choice and purpose.
Usually themes are developed to be easy to use and read.

Hmmmm … do I have to choose just one? It’s a blog about a real “passion” of mine that I hope will be of interest to others and make me some money as well.

I guess what I need to know is that, based on other people’s experiences (usually their mistakes!) is it best to choose on the basis of one particular criterium, such as color or banner placement, or just pick one that visually appeals to me and worry about the other stuff later?

Pick one that is visually appealing to you and worry about the rest later. Good thing about WP is as long as you aren’t changing a theme a lot, you can always just activate a new one.

I myself look for themes with the right layout as far as sidebars, header, and footer, then I edit the theme to add new widget areas where I want them, and change pretty much every aspect of the theme except for the layout.

doranpalmer — Thanks! I didn’t realize it was so easy to change. I guess I’m thinking back to the old FrontPage themes and templates where you were pretty much “stuck” with one design unless you re-did the entire site.

Okay, now all I have to do is look through 768 or so themes! YIKES. What have I gotten myself into?????
