Can't seem to find a definitive answer to this. Does 2.7.1 permalink migration in WP use a 302, 301, or some other form of redirection?

We are trying to troubleshoot an issue where a permalink change caused my Google rankings to plummet about 3 weeks after the switch. From what I am reading there should have been a 301 redirect and the rankings should have been maintained. Now to find out why they weren't.
