[Sat Oct 05 23:01:33 2013] [error] [client 204.*] WordPress database error MySQL server has gone away for query SELECT option_value FROM wp_options WHERE option_name = '_transient_doing_cron' LIMIT 1 made by _get_cron_lock

I check error logs for the XSS attacks but see this daily on one site. Cron is for backups I believe. I don't get daily backups from this site but I didn't realize until I noticed the errors. What is locking up the db?

    Hi SickSquirrel,

That happens because the query is taking long to execute thus MySQL is timing out. In that case, the solution depends on what is exactly happening.

For example if the query is taking long to execute and it is legit then you should increase the MySQL server wait period. More information can be found here:

    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/gone-away.html (Official MySQL documentation).

Alternatively you can refer to the following URL, where a non official solution is provided:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12425287/mysql-server-has-gone-away-when-importing-large-sql-file

P.s. to do any of the above you should have access to your MySQL server via command line or via phpMyAdmin.

Let us know if it helps.

Thank you! I'm going to ask my host to change time. Their answer was SO different and it's obvious they are clueless.

"That is nothing to worry about. It is a normal message when the service is restarted."

I should send them your links :)
