I've had WP running for years and now have 310 subscribers. I never really paid much attention to this. What is the point of subscribers if
1. I already have rss feed.
2. I don't require registration to comment.
3. My blog is public so everyone can read it.
4. I don't do any kind of notification.
Is there a downside to allowing registration (ie: security or spamming)?

"Subscribers" are the ones who has just registered to your site. They can see the dashboard (not like how admin sees it), comment on your site without entering name and email every time, etc. It's upto you to what to do with them. You may make them editors, authors, or make them the admin!
Subscribers are the lowest in level, so potentially it does not make any difference to your blog, except consuming a few lines of database.
