What is the essential php knowledge for wordpress?

...and where can I learn it?

I'm working a little behind the scenes by slightly customizing themes to my needs, but don't want to spend too much time learning a new language. Is there a resource for the essential php knowledge to work with WordPress themes (not create them)?

    Thanks for your efforts.

That link seems to cover far more than what I need for understanding some basic WordPress Theme operations.

Is there a 10,000 foot WordPress php essentials resource anywhere?

Sorry - there isn't one as far as I know.

I'd suggest checking out the WordPress docs here:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development
    and here:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Working_with_WordPress#Site_Development

And, when a problem comes up, just trying to use Google to find the answer. The only way I've ever learned anything worth knowing is with a goal or project in mind. Trying to just learn everything one might need to know about *any* programming language is so overwhelming that it seems impossible to me. But, solving a problem, or one problem at a time, feels more like something manageable.

Not a straight answer, really, but I hope it helps some.

    NetworkGeek,

Your answer was very helpful and an inspiring approach we shall take. We appreciate the time you took to share these links and philosophy.

    Hi

same here use the wordpress main website there is tons of documentation on the site as well as tutorials. I agree read about codex and use google or join linkedin. I have a group called wordpress lovers where if you get stuck post a discussion and people will help.

I've been using the following very simple wordpress template making guide lately:

    http://www.wpdesigner.com/2007/02/19/so-you-want-to-create-wordpress-themes-huh/

It's not very advanced, and goes very slowly, explaining everything very well along the way.

It might be a little too basic for your needs, but you can supplement it with the w3c homepage and wordpress codex.
