What is featured image used for? (8 posts)

    Just curious as to what featured image does and how it is different than any other image uploaded to the media gallery.

    The way I always thought it would have worked (I'm starting to use WP more, really looking at all the features and getting into how they operate) was that an image could be designated as featured image and a widget or area could be set to show a slideshow of any images marked as such without having to manually add images to the slideshow. The way it seems to work, as far as I can tell, is the exact same (actually less conveniently) as uploading an image and inserting it into a post.

    Can someone explain featured images? How are they different than any normal image?

    How the featured image (post thumbnail) is used depends upon the theme that you are using.

    Thanks for the links - I'd been through them before posting here but it's still not clear to me, unfortunately.

    From those pages, it sounds to me like featured image is a thumbnail of the entire post to be shown in a summary of posts but that definition is not what I've seen when I see videos and tutorials explaining how to use Featured Image; it's people inserting images into posts with a bunch of CSS and PHP fiddling being done, like if you wanted to make inserting images far more difficult. An example video is here. To me, it looks like this lady takes the long hard road to insert an image into her post.

    Not in all themes, no. It's just an extra piece of functionality that is made available via WordPress core. How it is used on the final site depends upon the theme that you are using.

    So I can infer that sometimes this is the case...? But other times they make coffee, and then they measure the sun's rate of movement in the sky depending on the theme I'm using? I mean c'mon, thrown me a frickin' bone over here.

    This could be used to describe ANYTHING IN WORDPRESS. Thanks,

    I guess it will just have to remain a mystery, as they seem too powerful to be defined in anything other than the broadest of vague terms. I just wish I knew what theme that lady in the video was using so that I could understand what she was trying to do. How frustrating of her.

    what do you want to know?

    a 'featured image' is an image that is connected to a post/page and can be shown independantly from the post's/page's content in various templates.

    - 'to be shown in a summary of posts' is one of the possibilities;

    - to be used as the header image for a post or page is a different possibility - this is used in Twenty Ten and Twenty Eleven;

    - to be used in a gallery of posts or for post navigation is another ...

    - plugins can hook into it for various uses (think ecommerce products)

    - to be used in different ways depending upon the post format/type

    - to selectively list posts (posts with thumb v. posts without)

    We're not trying to be awkward here. You really are asking a kind of "how long is a piece of string" question.
