What happens when I download WP? (5 posts)

I run a WP blog hosted on Bluehost - they had a quick, easy installation for it, and the files are automatically updated on my site as if I was just using the regular WordPress.com blog, only the domain is something.com.

I need to start another project and would like to use WP. But for this I need to use a domain and server I already have elsewhere. They say I can download WP and then upload the files through FTP. I have done FTP stuff before so that I can somewhat handle. But I don't understand what this whole thing means. When I download WP, will I get a program on my computer that looks like the wp-admin area, where I make the posts and publish them - except only now, using FTP thing, I will save the posts as files and then upload them? How about themes and such? I don't know HTML, coding or anything special - how will using WP be different without automatic installation from the server, but instead using FTP?

Sorry for rambling, I don't quite know what to ask even. I just really don't know what to expect. And I don't want to just try it and ruin something in the process (I'm already running a non-WP website in that domain I'm going to use for the new WP blog). Thanks so much in advance.

when you download wordpress, you get a zip file
you will unzip this to upload the files to your web host
you would have to actually install wordpress on your computer to get a working wordpress

After I upload the WP files to my host, how do I access WP and make posts, choose a theme, etc.? Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks for your help!
