what happens if I don't upgrade? (6 posts)

    Hi,

I had someone set up my wordpress blog on my website just before the most recent upgrade. It has a custom template and I am afraid to update to the newest version because I don't want the custom template to get messed up because I won't know how to fix it. The version I have (I'm not even sure which one it is - where does it say what version you're using?) seems to work just fine.

My question is what will happen if I just don't do the upgrade? Will I be able to continue to use wordpress as I have it or will it eventually stop working or will I run into other problems?

    Thank you for the information.

    Yes.

Who ever set up your WP left out the easy way to see your version. Maybe you should direct your questions to them. They seem real smart . . .

You can find your WordPress version on the bottom of any administration screen. As to not updating, everything will continue to work the way it worked. One potential problem with not updating is that sometimes software contains security vulnerabilities. So if your version has them, it could be possible for a malicious hacker to exploit them.

let me fix those last two sentences for you, NC.

One massive and certain problem with not updating is that software always contains security vulnerabilities. So once they're discovered, it's easy for a malicious hacker to exploit them.

... Security updates for *known* exploits are included in every new version. Updating is therefore really quite important. It would be nice if they would branch off at 2.3, but that's not going to happen.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will have to figure out a way to update. Unfortunately, I can't use the person who originally set it up.

You can always try setting up a dummy blog somewhere (on a folder within your domain, for example), and upgrading to 2.51 with your custom theme -- you'll get to see what happens to it without messing up your live blog.

The fact that security fixes are tied to upgrades are annoying to many of us, but there's been a lot of chatter about this, and it is apparently a policy that is here to stay for the foreseeable future.
