I am very new to all this, and I'm trying to put my blog together. I'm trying to set up the pages and there are a line of boxes with codes in them along the top. Where can i find out what these mean? I can't seem to find a line break or line feed. (I would like to double space between paragraphs and it isn't working.)

You will get more help if you provide meaningful information such as a link to the site in question or some exact details of what these codes are/say.
It sounds like you're talking about the editing buttons on the text editor where you create a new page or post, right?
If so, that's not where you change line spacing or the space between paragraphs. You'd do that in style.css, in your theme folder. You'll have to learn a bit of css, but there are plenty of resources on the web and of course you can ask for some help here.
