Hello ... and thanks in advance

Assuming I can follow instructions and get WordPress installed ...

What do I need to know to use WordPress -- to post messages and links, and manage a typical blog?

Php skills needed? Other technical stuff?

    Thanks very much ... RankBeginner

You can easily use WP right out of the box, so to speak, with no php or other skills, I think. Where those types of skills, and especially a minimal understanding of css, comes in is so you can revise your blog to look the way you want it to. But we have good resources to help you with that. I knew nothing about css when I started and I think i'm doing ok. :)

You need to know how to type. The basics of using your computer and the Internet would help, as well. Beyond that, once you get WordPress installed and working on a site, technical skills required to run it are extremely low...about the level of being able to post here in the support forums.

Thank you -- that's the answer I was hoping to hear. I am comfortable with CSS -- but I was PhP-phobic. ... I will download and install WordPress this week.

Rank, I knew *nothing* about php when I first installed WP at the beginning of this year. Now, I know barely more than nothing, but I've picked up enough that I feel pretty comfortable editing my files to make them suit me better. It's not hard to learn at all, and the folks around here are very willing to help when we newbies get stuck. :-)

Im still a rank beginner but the people here are friendly and help you with any WP issues and thats what counts. I started my blog in mid January and it took me a couple of days to get the database connection after that you just look at the tutourials and guides heres a great link for some background info from Podz http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/

All the best with your blog :)

One thing I think gets overlooked is the importance of a GOOD ftp client. I have had tons more problems from "uploading" my WP than from my actual WP blog. I've been able to correct many of my problems just by re-uploading a file or two that got corrupted.

    Good luck, and have fun!

This board by its nature tends to attract being doing Wp to the max. It is sometimes easy to miss the fact that using WP is very easy right out of the box.
php is definitely not needed but many of us get drawn that way when we are ready.
