It all depends on what you want your blog to do. I can give you my recommended list here:
http://memetic-selection.no-ip.info/?page_id=89
but those are the ones that make my blog work the way I want it 🙂
One plugin you will almost certainly want is the Akismet anti spam plugin in that list.
I’m assuming that you want a long url to look nice and tidy when displayed on the page. Something like this:
Tidy link to this post
Which, under the hood looks like this:
<a href="http://wordpress.org/support/topic/76152?replies=1">Tidy link to this post</a>
In your WordPress post editor, highlight the word or phrase you would like to make a link, click the link icon (looks like a chain link) and type in the url you want it to reference.
As far as best hacks and plugins, WordPress is pretty powerful out of the box. It all depends on what functionality you need.
In the “must have” category – read the sticky post on the main page about Spam and rapidly download and install at least two of the most recommended 3 plugins!
I think I have to say that Widgets is the best thing that has ever happened in the area of WordPress customization since I started using it. All it takes is a theme that supports it (or a not that tricky modification to your current one), and even moms will be able to change the items on the sidebar.

That is what I thought too. However when I do that it changes it. Let me explain. I have this sentance on my blog:
You can purchase the book on http://www.amazon.com.
I want the http://www.amazon.com to link to this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0929292618/sr=8-1/qid=1150083526/ref=sr_1_1/002-1038503-9132840?_encoding=UTF8
But still look like this http://www.amazon.com.
So I highlight all of http://www.amazon.com I click on the link button(look like a chain). A pop up comes up. In the pop up under link url: I paste this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0929292618/sr=8-1/qid=1150083526/ref=sr_1_1/002-1038503-9132840?_encoding=UTF8
I leave the option open in same window or new window it does not matter.
I have tried putting a title or not. As soon as I click update it changes my text that said http://www.amazon.com to the big long ugle url:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0929292618/sr=8-1/qid=1150083526/ref=sr_1_1/002-1038503-9132840?_encoding=UTF8
Under html code I can manualy change it but I don’t want to have to do that every time I put a link in and my mom dad and wife can’t do that.
Thank you for all your help with this issue.
Thank you for the suggestions on plugins
