What are Markdown and Textile plugins for? (3 posts)

I've just installed a copy of wordpress 1.5, and I'm quite curious what exactly does the Markdown or Textile 1 plugins do? I've tried following the links, but can't quite make much sense of it.

Would I like to have one, or the other, turned on right now?
How do i use it, why would i want to, and which should I choose?

Should I just leave it off for now, and turn it on later, or would I be better of turning either on right from the start?

They're sort of like BBCode (if that helps). I.e. You write things like [b]bold[/b] and it displays as bold*. If you're going to use either one; it's probably best to start using it right away otherwise you might run into problems later with older posts not showing up after turning on the plugin.

    * Note: I don't use either plugin; so I don't know the syntax they actually use, but hopefully this gives you an idea of what these would be for.
