Weird discrepancy among post count - all, published, draft (4 posts)

I've got the weirdest problem. When I click on "edit posts", I see a discrepancy between the number of "all" posts, and the total of published and draft posts. The number of published posts is 950, the number of drafts is 5, but the number for all is 1008.

Any idea what's going on and how to fix it? Many thanks for your help with this one.

Just guessing...any other authors on your blog where you might not have access to their posts (e.g. private posts)?

Michael, thanks. No, that's not the issue, I'm the only author.

However, I think I've figured it out...the 50 or so posts not showing up in the count turned out to be draft versions of posts that my WordPress installation somehow saved. (I went into my database to investigate further.) Their status is indicated as "inherit".

The question is, can I delete these posts safely so they're not taking up room in my database, and, if so, how do I go about doing that? And is there a way to change my settings in my dashboard to prevent this from happening again? Many, many thanks in advance!

What's the post_type on those records? Expecting you to find post_type as revision...which, if I read the program right only post_type of post is counted on that screen.

Here's a plugin that will delete revisions... http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/delete-revision/
