Couldn't find a proper place to submit this. It is not a request or criticism, but it is feedback.

Just wanted to say that http://www.wordpress-plugin.org/ is downloading plugins and themes from WordPress, adding a file to them, rezipping them, and distributing from their site as their own.

Is this legal. I have one plugin that they snatched from here while it was in Alpha, and that version has not been updated on their site. It is up to date here.

Posted a comment on the site for them to take my plugin down, but they have not complied.

    So here I am.

    Thanks Rich.

Out of curiosity, what do you think can be done about the site? And is there anything that plugin and theme developers can do?

Plugins in the repository here are GPL'd, meaning that modification and redistribution of them is allowed. So in that sense, they're doing nothing wrong.

Their domain name does violate the WordPress trademark, however.

Thanks for the info Otto. I am not sure if that is comforting though.

If you look at the site, they even try to come off looking like a WordPress site in some respects. The soft grays and big blue WP logo in the header.

They leave all of the contact and copyrights in place, but what is stop them from (let's say) adding attribution links for instance? Then the people who download the package come back to the original author and complain.

Nothing I'd say, though shady...It seems to be within the bounds of the GPL.... as @Otto says
