Website always breaks when I update WordPress

Hi, Hope someone can help me. I’m not a wordpress pro, I paid someone to customize my website and added a header and footer, when I updated wordpress it is now gone, another time I updated I lost my sidebar. Is it because I need a better theme or is this just what happens? I’m re-doing my website so I would like to know the best thing to do please thanks!!
