So I am trying to update wordpress but in the mean time I was trying to set up the website to let people know it isn’t working. However the home page isn’t a page I can write on so I created a separate page called home page. I also deactivated all the plugins so I can update wordpress. However when I set the account to powrloadr.com/1/home-page/ the whole website looks different. Also now when I try to sign in to the admin it gives me an error message. Where did I go wrong? and how do I fix it?

Wow, you are having problems sedao15,

First off, when you want a temporary ‘Under Construction’ page, it’s usually best to rename your current index.php file to something like index_old.php. You can then create a html page that give the message that you want.

The website looks different because it cannot find your stylesheet. Without digging around, there’s not a whole lot more that I can tell you.

As for the inability to sign in to the admin, you’re getting a 404 error. This means that the file is missing.

The easiest way to get back to where you were, is to reupload the blog from your backups… The ones that I hope you made!

Reply back and I’ll try to help further.

When transferring files I am using filezilla does it matter if I transfer the whole folder which includes the files or am I supposed to just transfer the files?

I had a backup of the files so I am getting everything back to square one. My next move is to delete the old files and then transfer the new wordpress files. Is all I do is delete wp-admin, content, and includes?

If you have proper backups – an exact copy of the files before the problem – you should be able to just replace all of the files in your blog directory.

It shouldn’t matter whether you replace the folder (with all the files included inside of it) or replace the files one-by-one.

If I backed up the files only after I realized the problem is there a way to fix this? Now when I am trying to upgrade it reads the old info. I messed up big time. What should I do next?

Now I am real confused because if I delete all the admin files and use new admin files why would it matter what I did there in the past?

    stop.

    youre overthinking this.

Delete everything inside the wp-admin/ directory on the web server.

Upload whats inside your downloaded and unzipped wp-admin/ directory to the directory you just emptied on the web server.

Do the same for the wp-includes/

ALL you are doing is deleting old files, and replacing them with the new ones in the same locations. It’s elementary.
