[resolved] WebPage Test says my images are NOT compressed (18 posts)

This is the page Google gives the most bad marks for loading slowly b/c of images...
    http://www.health-boundaries.com/fingernail-linesridges/

Today WebPage Tests says my images are not compressed. It also tends to say they are not progressive jpegs.

I laboriously used GIMP to make progressive jpegs prior to using quick and lovely (if it works) Smush.it

In WordPress I can't find Smush. It when I want to use it on an individual image. There is nothing, that I can find, in my media library that allows me to use Smush. It then and there.

How can I make sure my images are progressive jpegs, so Google stops dinging me?

    Hi @ConsiderThis1,

Thanks for posting on the forums.

In WordPress I can't find Smush. It when I want to use it on an individual image. There is nothing, that I can find, in my media library that allows me to use Smush. It then and there.

You can smush individual images from Smush.it column in your Media Library as displayed in the this screenshot.

How can I make sure my images are progressive jpegs, so Google stops dinging me?

You will find information about it on the following pages.

    Hi WPMU

The thing is, I can't find that page. I don't appear to have a Smush.it column in my Media Library... or, I don't know where the Media Library you mean... is.

Here's a screen shot of my media library

I'll check out the link about progressive jpegs... Thanks!

    Hi again WPMU -

Okay, so I'm aware of how progressive jpegs work and I LOVE them. I don't remember which site I read that said Smush. It produces progressive jpegs.

    Does it?

Making them individually takes quite a lot of time using GIMP.

If Smush. It doesn't produce progressive jpegs, is there a plug-in or program that you know of that does???? (without having to do it slowly, one image at a time)

    Hi WPMU

tiny png sounds GREAT. I installed, activated, got the key... and it doesn't appear, either. My header image would be wonderful if it were "tiny" ...

What am I doing wrong that I can't find the Smush. It and tiny png things????

I have a brain injury, so that may be part of the problem.

    Hi @ConsiderThis1,

The thing is, I can't find that page. I don't appear to have a Smush.it column in my Media Library... or, I don't know where the Media Library you mean... is.

Here's a screen shot of my media library

You are finding it in the wrong place, instead you should find it on the following page in the admin area.

Admin Area -> Media -> Library

Okay, so I'm aware of how progressive jpegs work and I LOVE them. I don't remember which site I read that said Smush. It produces progressive jpegs.

    Does it?

Yes the Smush. It produces progressive jpegs which is written on the following page.

    http://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/smushit/faq.html#faq_crushtool

As WP Smush.it plugin uses Smush. It service for smushing images so it also produces progressive jpegs.

If you want to automatically smush images on upload then just select "Automatically process on upload" from "Use Smush.it on upload?" Media Settings field from the following path.

Admin Area -> Settings -> Media

    Kind Regards,

Hi WPMU, for whatever reason I'm not actually getting notified when you post a follow up...

Thank you for showing me where the Media Library actually is, for Smush.It. It's GREAT to see all that information!!!

The link you gave re progressive jpegs is somewhat confusing on the subject since it says, currently disabled... I'm not sure what that means.

Oh, one final question. I see that Smush. It handles png images, and reduces them in size.

Would I gain speed by making my png images into jpg images so they load progressively?

I was using Microsoft Word to crop my images. I didn't realize that the output is png images. If I used GIMP I could convert to jpg images, but it takes pretty long to do each image...

    Hi @ConsiderThis1,

Hi WPMU, for whatever reason I'm not actually getting notified when you post a follow up...

Make sure when replying you have checked the checkbox "Notify me of follow-up posts via email" in reply form or just click on "Subscribe to Topic" link in the right sidebar.

The link you gave re progressive jpegs is somewhat confusing on the subject since it says, currently disabled... I'm not sure what that means.

It means metadata stripping is disabled, but the progressive optimization shouldn't be.

Would I gain speed by making my png images into jpg images so they load progressively?

Yes you will get speed gain but you should know when to use png images and when to use jpg images.

If you want to use transparency in image then you should use png as jpg doesn't support transparency.

You will find some useful information about usage of png and jpg on the following pages.

Nope, no notifications. I have it checked to get notifications. My right sidebar only shows "unsubscribe" so ... I don't know why I'm not notified.

Thank you for the links re image types. I really need to know more about images.

    I appreciate your help.

By the way, is there a way to have some images NOT be optimized? Some of my images re fingernails lose important definition whey they are optimized...

    Hi @ConsiderThis1,

    You are welcome.

Nope, no notifications. I have it checked to get notifications. My right sidebar only shows "unsubscribe" so ... I don't know why I'm not notified.

Make sure it is not going in the spam.

By the way, is there a way to have some images NOT be optimized? Some of my images re fingernails lose important definition whey they are optimized...

Unfortunately currently there isn't an option to achieve it but there is work around to do this.

Select "Do not process on upload" drop down option from "Use Smush.it on upload?" WP Smush.it field in the admin area on the following path.

    Admin -> Settings -> Media

In the Media Library just select those images which you want to smush then bulk smush it by selecting "Bulk Smush.it" bulk action.

    Cheers,

    Hi @ConsiderThis1,

I'm not sure what's occurring with the notifications, perhaps you could check your spam or trash folders to see if they ended up there? Or perhaps you could double-check the email you have here onsite?

Are you receiving other wordpress.org emails?

As for not optimizing some images, yes that's possible. Simply don't use the builk smush options.

You can just smush them one-by-one, manually.

    Does that sound feasible?

    Cheers,
    David

Thanks, WPMU ~~~ let me see if I understand. I can unselect process on upload, upload the images I don't want to lose definition, then reselect process on upload....?

David ~ For whatever reason I received a notification for your post, but not the WPMU post prior to yours.

I receive notifications for the Montezuma theme forum.

    Nope, not in trash folder.

    Hi @ConsiderThis1,

Sorry if I confused things with my reply. Didn't realize that previous post had been made when I responded.

I can't see any reason you're not receive that notification. Hopefully I can assist here and you'll get these notices then. I'll keep an eye on this.

And yep, you can simply go in your dashboard to Settings -> Media and select the "Do not process on upload" option.

You can then smush images manually in the Media Library. Or you can select images one-by-one and bulk smush them.

    Hope that helps,
    David
